Am I too old, too fat, or too anything to start?

No. Total Jiu-Jitsu has worked with students ranging in age from 6 to 76; we also have worked with people with varying levels of physical fitness. All of our exercises, drills, and sparring can be catered to each individual's needs and goals.

Can women do Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed specifically to allow a smaller person to defeat a larger aggressor. The techniques encourage the use of leverage and position rather than strength. Those techniques make BJJ the perfect martial art for women.

I've never practiced a martial art. Am I allowed to practice with you?

Yes. Total Jiu-Jitsu consist of a wide variety of martial arts backgrounds. Some of our students hold high rank in other martial arts, while for others BJJ is their first art. Regardless of your martial arts background, you are welcome to train with us.

I have previous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience with a different team/teacher. Am I allowed to practice with you?

Yes. Total Jiu-Jitsu is an affiliate of the Royler Gracie-David Adiv Jiu-Jitsu Association. We welcome the opportunity to train with students from other schools.

What do I wear?

For beginning students, comfortable shorts or athletic pants and a t-shirt are recommended. Keep in mind that there is a good chance that the items you wear will be pulled and stretched so dress accordingly.

Once students decide to continue their training at Total Jiu-Jitsu, they will be expected to purchase a judo/jiu-jitsu gi. These gis can be purchased through the academy at a discount or at one of the many online vendors. Gi prices range from $50.00-$150.00.

I have a Karate/Tae Kwon Do uniform. Can I use it?

While you can use it, be aware that a lightweight uniform will likely tear within 2 weeks of practice. A great deal of stress is put on gripping the uniform, which is why Judo and Jiu-Jitsu gis are much heavier than those of striking arts.

How much do classes cost?

For detailed information regarding class pricing and payment options, please see Schedule & Fees.

How do promotions work?

BJJ has one of (if not the) hardest belt promotion systems in the martial arts. Students begin as white belts and then progress to blue, purple, brown, and black. The normal length of time in each belt for students at Total Jiu-Jitsu is 1.5 to 2 years.

When will I be promoted?

Promotions in BJJ are based on a number of factors. These include technical knowledge, time studying the art, and (most importantly) the ability level of the student to apply what he or she knows.

Promotions are given at seminars hosted by Total Jiu-Jitsu. There are approximately 4 seminars per year and they are taught by Royler Gracie-David Adiv black belt instructors. Promotions given are based on recommendations made by Total Jiu-Jitsu Instructors.

Do I have to compete?

No. Competition by members of Total Jiu-Jitsu is not mandatory.

For those interested in competition, we attend between six and eight competitions per year. These competitions are held throughout the Midwest, and competitors interested in competing will have ample opportunity to do so.

Can I use this stuff in a streetfight?

Yes. BJJ was developed for use as a practical self-defense application. However, the use of BJJ or any martial art in a real-life crisis situation requires much practice and dedication. No one will become an expert overnight.
